Becoming Pregnant in Colorado

tourism-pages-of-colorado:

Becoming pregnant is the most beautiful gift, waiting to meet your baby love brings a million emotions.  You picture what your little one will look like, who they will become and how this little angel will impact your life.  There is nothing that I wanted more than to savor every moment, capture every breath and live with purpose every day.

The one piece of advice that I was given over and over again was to -take as many pictures as possible of every moment- because these little bundles grow SO fast.  I prepared my iPhone for constant use, purchased several photo albums and researched every photographer within Colorado.  I didn’t want to miss a single thing! I must admit that I am a researcher and planner, especially when it comes to making an investment purchase (I had been looking for a photographer since I was 20 weeks pregnant but just couldn’t find one that I absolutely loved).

At 36 weeks I finally found what I was looking for, in The Bump magazine, it was an ad for a Newborn Photographer that displayed beyond gorgeous photos of pure preciousness.  I quickly visited the Beaver Creek Photography website, only to find more breathtaking photos, not just Newborns but Maternity pictures, Senior pictures, Professional pictures, Family sessions and documenting Baby’s First Year through photography.  The entire baby club is only $550.00 and with mentioning The Bump brings it down to an incredible price of $275.00.  I called Ania to schedule my newborn session, we needed to capture my baby girl before she was 7 days old to insure she would be asleep and pliable enough for different positions.

When I had called to make our appointment Ania mentioned taking Maternity photo’s before I delivered, I must admit that this wasn’t my favorite idea because I wasn’t feeling the most beautiful just entering my 9th month of pregnancy.  But I decided in my attempt to capture every moment that I would just go with it.  My husband and I both went, 37 weeks along, to meet Ania for the first time and photograph my ever growing belly. We were welcomed very warmly into Ania’s studio, she made us feel comfortable and I was easing into this Maternity shoot idea.  We took ones together, I was shot separately, using 3 different “outfits”, we were able to capture beautiful, intimate, special, magical and flattering pictures.  When we finally saw our pictures during the reveal I was absolutely blown away, I felt gorgeous, and was incredibly thankful for Ania suggesting this beautiful session in our Beaver Creek Home.

Traveling to Beaver Creek for the photographer was not an issue as we recommended that they use a service that we have used many times in the past. Blue Sky Limo in Beaver Creek provides the best Avon and Beaver Creek transportation service as far as I’m concerned. Their rates are super reasonable and they are very pleasant to deal with. I always recommend Blue Sky Limo in Avon & Beaver creek to all family and friends.

Just 3 short weeks later we brought our brand new baby girl (only 5 days old) to Ania for her newborn session.  I was a little nervous, this being our first time and knowing my little one already hated to be naked, would this be successful?  As soon as we walked in a sense of confidence came over me, Ania gently held my baby, calmed her cries and kept the studio very warm to keep our princess comfortable.  I was amazed how Ania was able to put our baby in perfect positions, I didn’t know that it was even possible to pose a brand new baby.

She had beautiful knitted hats, angel wings, headbands and so much more for us use in the session.  My baby girl pooped and peed during her session (diaper off), which I was embarrassed by, but Ania just told me not to worry, cleaned everything off and continued taking more amazing images of our little princess. Again we were blown away by Ania’s finished product, so much so that we decided to invest in the Baby’s First Year Package.

Though money was tight for us since I was no longer working, it was easy to get caught up in the price of this investment, but after looking at all the frivolous purchases we had no problem making it became clear that capturing these moments would be absolutely priceless.  This included our  Newborn, 4 Month, 8 Month, 1 Year and a Family Session, along with beautiful printed pictures, announcements and a beautiful pocket sized accordion book that was a huge hit with the grandparents.  So far we have had our Maternity, Newborn and 4 Month sessions and each time they just get cuter and cuter.

I almost dare to say that our 4 Month session takes the cake, it was full of whimsy, love and personality.  Again being nervous I was scared for the 4 month session because my baby HATES tummy time, doesn’t last more than 3 minutes before screaming or rolling over, the 4 month session has her on her tummy the whole time.  Ania some how managed to keep my baby distracted enough that baby love stayed on her tummy for the whole 45 minute session and captured her pureness and sweetness at the same time.

How to Hockey Skate Like a Pro

Thank you to the players, coaches and parents who submitted their top skating tips in the last couple weeks.

Rhymes, hand signals, games and more all add to the fun while improving skating skills. Read on for a sampling of tips.

Rhyme & Reason

When skating backwards kids have a real tendency to look down at the ice. This inevitably leads to a loss of balance and the player falling. To remind kids to keep their heads up, I’ve learned this little saying that works well:

“Look at your toes, land on your nose!”

The kids recite it and it seems to work.

–Andrew, Coach** **

The ‘Model’ Skate

To emphasize heads-up skating and a proper skating stance with bent knees, along with isolating the legs and thighs for power, I have the kids line up at the goalie line and skate the length of the ice with one of their gloves on their heads! This is very tough to do, but the kids love the challenge and at the same time it is teaching them to keep their head up, knees bent and skate using their lower body. The first person to skate end to end without losing the glove on his or her head wins a pizza! I learned this drill at Heartland Hockey camp from an instructor we call “Hollywood.”

–Jon, Coach

Instant Feedback

Give skaters immediate feedback on the quality of their knee bend while striding. As we all know, developing skaters will occasionally go through spells of skating with their legs far to straight or an exaggerated waist bend. To help correct poor skating posture in a timely manner, coaches and parents can use visual clues for the skater rather than having to stop or slow the skater to a conventional speed.

  • A hand placed on the head will remind a skater to keep her head level while skating.
  • Patting the top of the head will clue in the skater that he’s too tall and needs more knee bend.
  • A hand to the chest will communicate to the skater that he needs to keep a big chest while skating backwards rather than an exaggerated bend at the waist.

Visual clues give immediate feedback to the skater while minimizing down time. There is no stigma attached (like when coaches pull players out of a drill for not doing it correctly) and allows the skater to develop a feel for the correct skating posture as compared to a poor one.

–Brad, Coach

Dryland Matters

I asked my Grandpa, Chuck Grillo, for his best skating advice. The tip is: Ultimately off-ice training is the difference maker. Professional mentors and scouts have known this for years. Once the technique fits your body physiologically, your goal should be to get bigger, quicker, stronger and faster. Technique should be repeated in warm up drills.

This is a simple, but not easy process. Jump, sprint, lift and skate on the same day and you have four different muscle groups, with four different ranges of motion, working and growing together. The end result is a bigger, quicker, stronger, faster skater capable of acquiring all of the agility and mobility skills incorporated in to the drills required for success. This also gives you a psychological advantage on your opponent in life knowing you paid a bigger price to succeed. Injuries sustained during competition heal quicker.

–Monique, Player, Age 11

The Walk-and-Chew-Gum Concept

My son learned early that the most important thing about power skating and hockey is this: To be able to skate with your bottom half and, at the same time, using your upper body to control what happens on the ice. Basically, the walk-and-chew gum concept of hockey. We had to train his bottom half to work differently from his top half. So I had him work with a skating instructor to help him work on this. I see so many hockey players that stop skating when they have the puck, so being able to skate while having the puck increases players enjoyment plus increases goals.

–Jeff, Parent

You Can’t Score If You’re Not on the Ice

I think the most important tip that I learned was that you have to fight through the exhaustion in a game. I learned this from my dad and used this advice in a tournament. There were only two minutes left in the championship game and we were down by one point. We beat the same team the day before, but this day they came back stronger. My line was on the ice. Everyone was exhausted. My team had the puck and was going up the ice. I thought about going to the bench, but then I remembered my dad telling me that even if you’re tired you should fight through the pain. So I skated up the ice with my teammates. One of my teammates passed me the puck, and without having time to think, I scored! The game was tied and we went into overtime. Now, the whole team had energy! A few minutes later, another one of my teammates scored and we won the game! I’m really glad I didn’t take myself out of the game!

–Rachel, Player

**Go For It! **

I learned from my mom and dad to skate hard and extend my stride. It has helped me a lot this year mom, and made me faster and helps when I am trying to outskate someone with the puck and score my team a goal. I told the other kids to try it, too, and it helped us all score lots of goals for the team.

–Wyatt, Age 8

Character Counts

The No. 1 skating tip I learned and taught to my two boys over the years was in Brett Hull’s acceptance speech into the Hockey Hall of Fame: “Have fun playing the game or it isn’t a game anymore. And it doesn’t matter how many goals you score on the ice, it is what you do off the ice that counts.”

–Trent and Tammy, Parents of a PeeWee and Bantam

A ‘Holy Cow’ Moment

I had a “holy cow that’s simple” moment when I was helping with an early bird session for Mites and Squirts. A coach was telling the kids how to do a power turn. He told them to just bend the knee on the side they wanted to turn to and straighten the other leg. It worked for all of them, the first time.

–Steve

**Limbo **

Teach them to do the limbo on ice! Instead of bending over backwards to go under the bar, use the proper stride stance to go under the bar (a pretend bar will do). Then mark it out where they need to do it in a certain number of strides, not too many not too few.

–Kris

Quick Start

My older sister told me that the first three steps make a huge difference in your stop-to-start speed. Those three quick steps can change your game.

–Jenny, Player, Age 13

**Flat Blades **

Keep your blades flat on the ice when performing turns to give better control and maintain your speed. I learned that from Shjon Podein.

–Charlie

Catch an Edge

Analyze and visualize how to get the best use of your edges.

The Best Hotels Aspen Has to Offer

https://www.cityofaspen.com/Aspen has sure come a long way since the 1940’s when Chicago native Walter Paepcke came and reinvented the town from its old silver mining roots into the cultural center it is today. Walter founded what is now known as the Aspen Institute, as well as the seminal International Design Conference in Aspen (IDCA) which is highly influential in the look and feel of modern Aspen. Many of the hotels and residences in Aspen have been either directly or indirectly shaped and influenced by the work and organizations created by Mr. Paepcke

Here are some of the famous buildings around Aspen, influenced by the Aspen Institute, which are also available as accommodation to people visiting this amazing mountain community.

 The Little Nell

This luxury five-star, hotel is located at the very base of Aspen Mountain, right beside the Silver Queen Gondola which is named after the “Silver Rush” the mountain town experienced in the 1880’s. This place has probably the very best and most convenient location in all of Aspen. The direct mountain access offers guests lots of adventures from skiing to mountain biking first thing in the morning. They also have snow cat tours organized by the hotel which can take parties of up to 10 people up the mountain for some backcountry activities. A new offering by the hotel which has long been enjoyed by locals is the Full Moon Powder tour. Locals usually hike up the mountain late at night to enjoy the thrill of fresh powder underneath a full moon light. Now the Nell, is putting a luxury spin on the activity with a snow cat ride up the mountain and snacks and hot chocolate to keep you comfy and warm.

The St. Regis

This majestic historic red brick building sits in the very heart of downtown Aspen. There are incredible statues of Colorado wildlife in the lobby, and the whole place looks and feels every bit the quintessential Colorado Mountain lodge. There are even oil paintings depicting the Wild Wild West. If you think American West luxury, well this is it. There’s a massive fireplace in the center of the lobby and authentic antique furniture to match the rest of the décor. As one of the few pet friendly options in town, the St. Regis welcomes dogs and cats for their wealthy patrons who couldn’t bear to leave their beloved pets at home. The hotel also has one of the very best Spas in town. The Remede is modern and classic at the same time. They have Oxygen treatment to help mitigate the transfer in altitude. If you expect the very best, the St. Regis will fit the ticket.

Hotel Jerome

The Hotel Jerome is legendary not just in Aspen, but worldwide. It is the oldest hotel in Aspen, having first open for business all the way back in 1889 when the town was experiencing it’s Silver Boom. The establishment managed to remain open even with the crash of silver prices and through the world wars and depression, which is testimony to its longevity and popularity. The Kennedy’s used to frequent here often. It’s the hotel of choice for Jack Nicholson. Also the “J Bar’ which is the social hub within the hotel was Hunter S. Thompson’s favorite place to hang out while he was working on his next literary offering, or planning to run for Aspen mayor (true story). The hotel screams of history and Aspen lore. It’s legendary for a reason, and no trip to Aspen would be complete without visiting this amazing historical landmark.
